County Benefits

The Veterans Service Office provides confidential counseling and assistance for

Veterans, widows/widowers, and dependents concerning veterans benefits and programs.  We provide assistance with obtaining required documents and completion of and submission of applications for:

  • County Veterans Aid Fund (CVA).  Applications considered for emergency  expenditures for monthly expenses to include utilities, food, and housing.

          Eligibility requirements include:  Character of military service must be

Honorable or General (Under Honorable Conditions) active duty service in one of the periods of service listed here.

Nebraska residency.  Veterans who entered military service from a State other than Nebraska must prove residency in Nebraska for  the past one (1) year and must have proof of residency in Sarpy County for six (6) months immediately prior to submitting an application for CVA.  

  • Bronze Flag Holder.  For veterans interned in a Sarpy County cemetery, we can issue a bronze veteran flag holder to surviving family members to be placed on the deceased veteran's grave site.  We will need a copy of the discharge certificate, DD 214 or other document verifying military service and request completion of a Grave Registration Form.  This information will be submitted to the Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs for their historical files.  Follow this link for examples of these flag holders. www.centeccast.com/product/veteran_markers/service_markers/default.html
  • Home Visits.  Visit care facilities and housebound veterans if transportation is   not available or if veteran's health prevents visiting our office.  During these     visits, we provide assistance in completing benefit applications. 
  • Military Personnel Records, Service Medical Records Requests.  Veterans' personnel files are stored at the National Archives and Records Administration, the official repository for records of veterans of all military services, located in St. Louis.  Go to Military Records for information on how to request these records. 

    If you request your records by mail, complete and submit your signed/dated SF 180 to the National Personnel Records Center:

          Requests sent by Priority Mail, Fed Ex, UPS, or other express services will only
          arrive at the records center sooner.  They will not be processed any faster
          than requests sent by first class mail or fax.       

          Most, but not all records, are stored at the National Personnel Records
          Center.  Be sure to use the address specified by eVetRecs or the instructions
          on SF 180.  Go to location of military service records for addresses of where
          military service records are filed for active duty personnel and military retirees.          

  • Requests for issuance or replacement of military award medals. 

          Medals Requests

  • Filing DD 214(s).  Assist veterans in filing their DD 214(s) with the Sarpy County Clerk.  We will need original Member Copy, Page 4, which has the characterization of discharge on it.  Veteran will receive the original DD 214 back with an ink stamp listing the book and page where a copy of the DD 214 is filed.  The filed copy is kept in a vault area with limited, controlled employee access.  DD 214s are not a matter of public record and are not scanned into a computer file.  The only items input into a computer database is name, book and page numbers where it is filed and date filed.  Veterans can receive two certified copies at no cost.  Additional copies are $1.50 each.

  • Veterans Preference Letter, Veterans 10-Point Preference Form requests. Veterans who are receiving VA disability compensation can request a

           preference letter by calling 1-800-827-1000.

    • The Veterans 10-Point Preference Form and a copy of your DD 214 will give you five (5) points.  A Veterans Preference Letter will give you another five (5) points, for a total of 10.
  • Referrals to social service agencies and other county veteran service offices.
  • Employment/Small Business Information.  We have a variety of employment brochures and limited job listings.  If you recently lost your job go to
